Doing pure css layout is too difficult for people that don't work with style sheets, so a simple customization like setting the header art can be daunting.

Now we have a IF evaluator in templates, it is easy (for users and implementation) to use preference values set in TWikiPreferences; when no preference value is set a default value can be used.

(likewise the left bar width can be set)

If PatternSkin was a plugin and not just a skin, these variables could be set in the plugin topic.
