In the TWiki core module, templates/viewtopicactionbuttons.tmpl defines the edit_topic_link block with the icon

hardwired. The icon's design may not suit to a custom skin. As such, instead of hardwiring the icon, the edit_topic_link must refer to the edit_topic_link_label_prefix block, which is defined as %ICON{uweb-o14}% in templates/viewtopicactionbuttons.tmpl.

Then, you can customize or eliminate the icon by redefining the edit_topic_link_label_prefix block.
