Item6273: "This topic does not exist" page can takes a long time to load

Example: in a web with 20,000 topics at my company: 35 seconds to return and load the "topic does not exist" template

Comparison: It takes about 6 seconds to return and load an existing page

Comparison: smaller web (roughly 1500 pages): 6 seconds to return and load the "topic does not exist" template

Investigation indicates that the time is being taken up by the calculation of the "list of similar topics" that appears on that page. Populating that list takes a long time on large webs.

I think TWiki is over-optimizing as the "list of similar topics" isn't visib;le unless/until the user clicks the "==> List more similar topic in this web" link? Could we postpone calculating the list of similar topics until the user clicks for it?

When a page takes a long time to load - it makes for a poor user experience - people decide that TWiki is "slow" - the likelihood that the user will click reload increases - the chance of the server going down increases

Vicki, this is good observation. we should raise the proposal to "List more similar topic in this web" link button somewhere

Agreed, is a usability issue for large webs. On the other side, quickly navigating to a page if you remember part of the name is a useful feature. I would not like to miss this feature, or have one more click to navigate to a page I need.

So, IMHO best solution is to have behavior selectable by the admin.
