The pickax button is great. I really like the feature.
However, wouldn't it be possible to have a way to start the editor in raw text mode instead of WYSIWYG mode?
I have hundreds of TWiki users who are used to raw text editing. I don't like to surprise those users by changing the Edit button's default behavior all of a sudden. At the same time, I'd like to provide an easy access to the WYSIWYG editing feature.

What about a checkbox "Start editing in Raw View" below the button "Create this topic"?
It is not a good solution as it will add more cruft for the other 99%. But it might be something for your particular installation.

To do this you'd have to (1) start the editor in WYSIWYG mode (2) switch to raw mode. Lots of screen flashing and red banners, lots of load on the server. Not keen. Wouldn't it be better just to modify the templates and swap over the "Raw Edit" and "Edit" buttons?

I like the original suggestion. What about having a switch so that a particular site or web can default to either (1) raw mode, (2) wysiwyg mode with no initial help screen (which is poorly designed, btw - is this a
TinyMCE "feature" or a choice?), (3) wysisyg with that more-confusing-than-helpful help screen as at present. There are sites I'd run as (1) or (2) - none as (3). If it were just me, sure it's an easy mod to make by hand. But I'm guessing a large proportion of users won't like the current setup, so building in a switch for the choice would in the end be far more efficient than all of us tweaking by hand.

Not sure what you mean by:
- original suggestion
- no initial help screen (where did you see that?)

No action since there is no feedback
