the regex in _handleNewLink is way too brittle, as users can set NEWLINKSYMBOL to anything, and it defaults to 

<sup?</sup>

which also breaks teh regex, leaving a new link looking like 

some NewTopic<sup>?</sup></a>

instead i'm just brute force setting those vars to '' in publish()
