Hi,
This is a request to please change each distributed web's
WebNotify.txt to
a) not mention an extra e-mail address like
example@yourNOSPAM.company. Instead, the system will use the address known for the given
WikiName.
b) possibly even comment out the one
TWikiGuest entry.
Affected webs in 4.0.4: _default, TWiki, Main, Trash, Sandbox.
I just went through a TWiki installation and found this the most annoying default setting. I had to change it in all places. I'd rather
not see the e-mail logs stock warnings for example.com.
Add a): not repeating the e-mail avoids redundancy and lowers the risk of stale data when people's address changes. Indeed, nobody in
TWiki:TWiki/WebNotify
uses a distinct e-mail address.
Add b): I was considering using an empty e-mail entry for TwikiGuest in the
.htpasswd
file (I'm using Apache login). Security considerations (read somewhere in TWiki) made me believe it's better to have an e-mail entry for everybody. So by default, this user would receive notifications: not ideal.
Summary: a) is important, b) is left to think about. Maybe TWiki should document what happens with bad entries there: silently ignored or error message in logs?
Regards,
TWiki:Main/JoergHoehle
I came across
TWiki:Codev/OmittingEmailInWebNotify
which mentions that
TWikiGuest will not receive notifications. This makes sense but should be documented in
WebNotify -> enhancement!
It would have prevented our admins from commenting out each TWikiGuest entry, which later led to incorrect indentation of subsequent entries, indented by 4 spaces, as follows:
# *
TWikiGuest
* RegularUser - too much indentation
Summary: enhancement a) above is still recommended, b) is superfluous and superseeded by the following suggestion:
Please add something like this: Note: You need not comment out the
TWikiGuest entry, this user is always excluded from notification services.
